Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server, version 4.5 is the network solution for small business designed specifically to address the needs of companies with 50 or fewer workstations. Small Business Server 4.5 is easy to install, manage, and use and provides small business with improved productivity though significant upgrades to many of the applications in the suite. It also delivers a new set of tools and product functionality designed specifically for technology providers.

BackOffice Small Business Server is the industry-leading small business server suite from Microsoft. Small Business Server is a comprehensive and integrated suite of server applications designed to provide small businesses with the powerful networking and application server capabilities of Microsoft Windows NT Server; as well as internal and external e-mail, a relational database, fast, secure Internet access, fax and modem sharing services, and an easy-to-use console for basic server administration.

Components included with BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5:

• Microsoft Windows NT
  Windows NT 4.0 is installed and updated with Service Pack 4. Windows NT domain trusts are disabled. To enable trusts, you must upgrade to either Microsoft BackOffice Server 4.5 or Microsoft BackOffice Server 2000.

• Microsoft Exchange Server
  Exchange Server 5.5 is installed with Service Pack 2. The following Exchange Server components are NOT included in SBS 4.5:

  • Message transfer agent (MTA) transport stack

  • Dynamic RAS connector

  • Site connector

  • Directory replication connector

  • Information store (the SBS computer cannot be only a public folder or private information store)
    
    

• Internet Information Server/Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack
  By default, SBS installs the following Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack components:
  

  • Microsoft FrontPage 98 Server Extensions

  • Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0

  • Microsoft Data Access Components 2.1

  • Index Server 2.0

  • Microsoft Management Console

  • Microsoft Script Debugger 1.0

• SQL Server 7.0 is installed

• Proxy Server 2.0 is installed during the SBS installation.
  

• Modem Sharing Service
  The Modem Sharing service is unique to SBS. This service supports up to four shared modems.

• SBS Fax Service
  The SBS Fax service supports up to four class 1 fax modems. The Fax service is unique to SBS.

• IIS, Proxy Server, Exchange Server, SQL Server, the Fax service, and the Modem Sharing service can be installed only on the SBS computer.
• SBS can be upgraded to the full BackOffice product suite.

OEM "Original Equipment Manufacturer" Software is distributed to companies like Dell, IBM & HP for installation on new machines.  The main difference is that OEM can not be used as an upgrade, any previous or trial versions of the software must be uninstalled before installing an OEM.  The packaging is typically CD & License, no box.  OEM Software does not come with installation support from the manufacturer.
